Abstract

It was shown that heat-resistant materials suffer a considerable reduction in strength when in contact with liquid low-melting metals. The strength of grade A-995 alumina ceramic is reduced under these conditions by 33%, the alumina fracture surfaces being readily wetted by the molten metal. These effects may be attributed to an adsorption-induced reduction in the solid/liquid interface energy.
