Abstract

Bronchiolar mucus is a common autopsy finding in patients who die with chronic airway obstruction. Hogg et al 1 Hogg JC Macklem PT Thurlbeck WM Site and nature of airway obstruction in chronic obstructive lung disease. New Eng J Med. 1968; 278: 1355-1360 Crossref PubMed Scopus (943) Google Scholar have shown that bronchiolar mucus and mucus plugging in emphysematous lungs is associated with increased small airway resistance and therefore with potential reversibility. We have attempted to determine how reversible such obstruction may be by measuring forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), expiratory flow and airway resistance in excised postmortem human lungs before and after treating them with a mucolytic agent, acetylcysteine.
