Abstract

In this issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Hemli and colleagues1 report their retrospective study using The Society of Thoracic Surgeons database to describe transfusion practices in patients undergoing aortic root replacement in the setting of acute type A aortic dissection. This unique study provides useful and real-world data that encourages surgeons to use a more conservative blood product transfusion strategy, given the rise in morbidity and mortality associated with transfusions.2
