Abstract

In this paper, the author describes a lane following assistance system (LFAS) designed to reduce the mental workload of drivers. The LFAS detects the amount of lateral deviation of a vehicle within a traffic lane. An adjustment is then made to increase steering reaction torque as the vehicle deviates away from the center of the lane. The system configuration consists of a detection camera, an image processing and control unit, electric power steering, and a yaw rate sensor.
