Abstract

Background: NICU discharges are prone to miscommunications particularly after prolonged length of stay (LOS). Early two-way communication between parents and the team provides emotional support and a timely method of addressing concerns (Purdy et al, 2015). Our satisfaction surveys showed that parents were unfamiliar with discharge requirements and had little time to learn skills in preparation for independent care. Moreover, nurses and families alike were dissatisfied with the burden of being rushed to teach and learn new caregiving skills on day of discharge.
