Abstract

Diagnosing polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in adolescents is often challenging. Existing diagnostic criteria are based on adults and features of PCOS, such as, irregular menses, are typical clinical findings during adolescence. Over-diagnosis may mislabel patients leading to undue anxiety and overtreatment while under-diagnosis could result in missed opportunities to address risks associated with poor health outcomes. Using recommendations for diagnosis of PCOS based on the international consensus on the diagnosis of PCOS in adolescents (Horm Red Ped 2015; 83:376), this quality improvement project aims to assess variations in provider practices and adherence to diagnostic criteria in order to reduce variation within the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
