Abstract

(JAMA. 2018;320(12):1237–1238) Between 2000 and 2014, while many other countries saw decreases in maternal mortality, the rate in the United States more than doubled (9.8 to 21.5 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births). In addition, large ethnic/racial, geographic, and socioeconomic disparities exist, with African American women almost 3 times more likely than white women to die of complications related to pregnancy.
