Abstract

This paper presents a reduced-order finite element analysis of rough surface contact. Frictionless, elastic contact between a rough deformable block with Gaussian roughness and a rigid flat plate is considered. An equivalent one-dimensional rough surface of a two-dimensional rough surface is generated using MATLAB. Generated rough surface is superimposed on ten layers of generated mesh of the block and analysis is done in commercial finite element software Abaqus. Four-noded quadrilateral elements with reduced-order integration are used to decrease the computational time. The rigid plate is placed close to the largest asperity of the rough surface and is then displaced in small steps. Contact force and real area of the contact are calculated. Results are compared with the results of the full-scale finite element analysis in the literature and are found to be in good agreement.
