Abstract

For the emerging H.264/MPEG4 Advanced Video Coding joint standard, a deblocking filter in the decoder is required. The Adaptive Deblocking Filter by List et al. has low complexity because it only uses addition, shift and comparison operations. In this paper, adaptive deblocking filter was analyzed and found that more than 90% of the computation resources were spent on computing edge strengths. I propose and implement a reduced complexity edge strength computation that exploits the similarity of edge strengths among adjacent normals. The simulation results show that the signal-to-noise ratio (in dB) and mean structural similarity index are within 1% of those of the original algorithm while computation is reduced by 50%.
