Abstract

The oxidation of the mixed-valence compound M in the title (Ru III (EDTA), Ru II (NH 3 ) 5 ) by peroxydisulfate proceeds according to the rate law (a + b[S 2 O 8 −2 ])[M]. The peroxydisulfate-independent term corresponds to slow dissociation of M and is followed by the rapid reaction of Ru II (NH 3 ) 5 pz 2+ with peroxydisulfate. The peroxydisulfate-dependent term corresponds to direct reaction between M and S 2 O 8 2− . The reduced form of the compound in the title, R, reacts with peroxydisulfate according to biphasic kinetics. The first phase corresponds to oxidation of R to M, and the second phase is the reaction of M with S 2 O 8 2−
