Abstract
Redox properties of Mn+/M or Mn+/M(Hg) couples are examined in water and hydrogen fluoride mixtures containing 0 to 60% (by weight) of HF (Mn+=Cd2+, Ti+, Sn2+, Cu2+, Hg2+ and Hg22+). Redox functions R0(M) are calculated using the standard apparent potential of the couple ferrocene/ferricinium as reference potential. It is shown that solvation of Mn+ ions decreases when the HF content increases. R0(M) functions are used together with the R0(F) function previously established to evaluate the variation of the solubility of slightly soluble metallic fluorides; the example of PbF2 is given. Consequences of the variation of solvation on oxidizing power of HF are also examined.
