Abstract

Clarification was undertaken of the role of active carbon in metal supported on active carbon catalysts, which show high activities for methanol carbonylation. It was found that the reaction proceeded via a redox cycle of supported metals and that active carbon promoted the reduction step (in the case of nickel catalyst) and the oxidation step (in the case of palladium), respectively.
