Abstract

At the age of thirty-two William Cowper (1731-1800) was recommended by his cousin to become clerk of the English House of Lords. The appointment was challenged, and Cowper was called to be examined before the bar of the House. Fearing disgrace, he attempted suicide. His failed efforts were discovered, and he was persuaded to withdraw his candidacy for clerkship. Cowper soon became convinced that he had committed the unpardonable sin.? He grew so depressed that he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Cowper's recovery began with a decisive and sudden conversion. One day he opened the Bible at random, and his eyes fell upon these words:
