Abstract

Red squill is a historically attractive rodenticide that causes severe gastrointestinal irritation and heart dysrhythmias. Rats are particularly vulnerable to this toxin because they are unable to vomit. Medicinally, physicians used red squill to treat cardiac failure syndromes and irregular heart rhythms. If used continuously in humans as folk or alternative medicine, it may prolong disease and result in mortality. The treatment is primarily supportive via gut purification. It is also demonstrated that digoxin-specific antibodies (DigiFab) cross-react with red squill and need to be included in severe toxicity treatment.
