Abstract

Photophysical and optoelectronic characteristics of a series of ternary lanthanide (Eu, Sm) complexes with diacetylmethane (DAM) and substituted 2,2′-bipyridine derivatives as auxiliary ligands were examined thoroughly by various characterization techniques. Optical and electronic band gap analyses suggest the conducting nature of complexes. Vibrational spectral analysis affirms the binding of lanthanide ions with oxygen and nitrogen atoms of DAM and heteroaromatic auxiliary ligand respectively. Photoluminescence emission spectra indicate that the prepared trivalent complexes give red emission which is further confirmed by Commission Internationale de l′ Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates. Color purity value of complexes shows their luminous nature. Red light emitting materials have found good significance in solid state electronics, flat panel displays and organic light emitting devices (OLEDs).
