Abstract

Because of the increase of motor vehicles, the numbers of discarded tires in many countries have increased markedly. Improper treatment and disposal of scrap tires leads to pollution and hazards to the environment and mankind and wastes a great quantity of recoverable energy and materials. Recycling of discarded tires in Taiwan started at least 30 years back. Not until the promulgation of the “Regulations for Recovery and Disposal of Discarded Tires” in 1989 did the R.O.C. Government begin to promote scrap tire recycling. In this work, the current situation of scrap tire generation in Taiwan is indicated, followed by a discussion of recycling activities prior to 1989. The regulations governing waste tire recycling and its fundamental concepts are then described. Recent recycling efforts and the problems encountered are also indicated. Finally, several recommendations are made to better recycle scrap tires in Taiwan.
