Abstract

Pretreatment is a critical step to determine the feasibility of biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass. Pretreatment promotes the accessibility of cellulase enzyme to biomass and removes inhibitors of hydrolysis. An ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIM-Ac), was preferentially selected to be the pretreatment agent for rice straw due to its proven efficiency. In this study, the recycling process of EMIM-Ac was performed to find the possibility to reduce the cost of EMIM-Ac in rice straw pretreatment. Different mixed solvent systems were formulated to recover EMIM-Ac. The reducing sugar obtained from enzymatic saccharification were quantitated and Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy analysis were done to evaluate the recycling efficiency. After the 5th cycle of recycling, the sugar yield obtained from pretreated biomass was retained 91.04% suggesting the potential of EMIM-Ac recyclability.
