Abstract
In a large number of the folk music traditions across northern India, there is no melodic composition. Musicians who perform the music do not make up new melodies; similarly, composers who create new songs do not compose new melodies. In short, in many genres of North Indian folk music, no one is creating new melodies. That is not to say there there are no new songs. In fact, for many of these same genres, especially entertainment genres, there is a constant need for new songs. A professional singer must begin the new year with a least six to eight new songs so that he can stand in front of last year's audiences with new material.
