Abstract

Abstract Anthropogenic environmental impacts can largely be attributed to manufacturing. Two paradigms are promising solutions to mitigate the consequences of manufacturing: Industry 4.0 (smart manufacturing solutions) through increased efficiencies and Circular Economy (CE) through remanufacturing and recycling and avoiding manufacturing of new products. Potentials and challenges from combining the paradigms and thus, from transferring Industry 4.0 to remanufacturing and recycling operations need to be analyzed. This paper identifies smart manufacturing technologies and solutions, which support CE and maps them on remanufacturing and recycling operations to derive a Recycling 4.0 framework.
