Recurrent Ovarian Torsion Following Oophoropexy

Abstract

Abstract Background: Ovarian torsion is a gynecologic emergency that can have severe sequelae and is treated surgically. Case: In this article, a case of recurrent right ovarian torsion following several oophoropexy procedures is described. Clinical presentation consisted of intermittent right lower abdominal pain. Diagnosis was made by a combination of clinical presentation, ultrasound, and, eventually, laparoscopy. Several of the occurrences presented with ovarian cysts on either the right or left side. Therapy consisted of primary laparoscopic detorsion and oophoropexy, followed by multiple laparoscopic detorsions and oophoropexy procedures for recurring events. Results: After the final laparotomy and oophoropexy to the posterior uterine wall, the patient is free of complaints and symptoms. Conclusions: Although oophoropexy can be used for prevention of further episodes of torsion, recurrence is possible, and must be kept in mind as a possible diagnosis. (J GYNECOL SURG 27:281)
