Abstract

Using defected ground plane structures, wideband, multi-band and circularly polarized designs of microstrip antennas have been reported in the literature. However, an insight about antenna function is missing in most of the papers. This paper presents a design of ground plane slots loaded nearly square microstrip antenna for multi-band and circular polarized response. The slots in ground plane tune the inter-spacing between patch TM10, TM11 and TM20 resonant modes that gives multi-band response along with circular polarization in one of the band. In the circular polarized band, MSA shows axial ratio bandwidth of nearly 1%. To enhance the gain, air suspended design of proposed configuration is put forward, which shows similar antenna impedance and pattern characteristics but offers peak broadside gain in the range of 2–5 dBi.
