Abstract

1. A silky fracture of large drills made of high-speed steel is obtained after final heat treatment on condition that austenite recrystallizes during rolling and subsequent incomplete annealing of blanks. For drills of steels R12, R6M5, and R6M3 these conditions are as follows: Rolling at temperatures not below 1150° and annealing to a hardness not above HB 270. 2. A similarity was observed in the position of coarse-grained zones in the blank after rolling and in the silky fracture of the drill.
