Abstract
The author expresses concern for the future of nursing if a reduction in the educational entrance requirements to the profession is adopted as one of the means to broaden the entrance gate to nursing. The legacy of such a move is examined. The author suggests consideration of the role and responsibilities of existing nursing care providers, and recommends consideration be given to determining a specific role for the graduate nurse.
