Abstract
The number of general practitioners and the annual number of recruits to general practice both fell during the middle 1960s with a recovery towards the end of the decade. The proportion of recruits with U.K. or Irish qualifications has fallen from 96% to 80% while that of recruits with Asian medical degrees has risen 4% to 18%. The main loss of U.K. qualified recruits to general practice has been among English and Welsh graduates, especially those with Oxford, Cambridge, or London degrees.
