Abstract

Anyone wishing to study the history of either one sport or pastime, or all the recreations of a particular century, should first read some of the general surveys. Two are J. Kay, Entertainment and P. Moss, Sports and Pastimes through the Ages. For older pupils there is D. Kennedy's Entertainment. Finally there is a volume in the pioneering series, It Happened Round Manchester. W. H. Shercliff, Entertainments covers dramatic events, musical entertainments and other popular amusements such as music halls and pleasure gardens in the Manchester region. Pupils must turn to books written mainly for adults if they are to study sports such as hunting, fencing, horse racing, tennis, fishing and cycling, or the amusements of gambling, drinking, seaside holidays, spas and pleasure gardens, toys and games, and the entertainments of music hall, street performers, magic-lantern and diorama shows, circus, cock fighting, bull baiting, folk-songs and dancing. .
