Abstract

Often occupational therapists desire to recommend a meaningful activity that can help to decrease maladaptive behaviors in a child with an autism spectrum disorder to complement treatment goals for increased participation. There is some evidence that participation in recreation programs that provide movement and proprioceptive input may help decrease such behaviors. Thus, this critical appraisal of the topic was completed to answer the following focused question: For elementary- and middle school-age children with an autism spectrum disorder, does participation in a recreational program result in decreased maladaptive behaviors that disrupt participation in school and at home?
