Abstract

Abstract The planktonic changes associated with the Maastrichtian-Danian boundary are described from successions in the North Caucasus, Russia. The extinctions recorded in the benthonic fauna are less sudden than those recorded in the plankton, with many pre-dating the end of the Maastrichtian. The Danian benthonic fauna contains a number of survivor taxa with few new species. The recovery interval for the benthonic fauna was much shorter and the increase in diversity occurred earlier than that of the planktonic fauna. Within the Globorotalia angulata Zone the recovery of the foraminiferal assemblage was almost complete.
