Abstract

The possibility of restoring decayed long-term potentiation of projections of Schaffer collaterals was studied in food-deprived rats on delivery of small food portions. Food delivery was found to produce partial recovery of the amplitude of the population spike of the first response in paired responses in field CA1. Population spike amplitude for the second response showed complete recovery. Food delivery in the control group of deprived rats without prior induction of potentiation did not change responses in field CA1. Recovery of potentiation in these experiments was linked with a defined level of emotional tension in the animal. In natural conditions, recovery of potentiation may be needed to solve tasks directed to satisfying needs of importance to the animal.
