Abstract

The electrical energy market has been expanded worldwide through investments in renewable energies. The wind power participation in the Brazilian electricity matrix has expanded owing to local government incentives and its increased competitiveness due to local wind industry growth and technological development. Taking into account the above considerations, this paper aims at developing a methodology for the reconstruction of historical wind generation series to support long-term analysis of the complementarity behavior between wind and hydro generation. The obtained results has enabled an evaluation of the complementarity between the power generation profiles between hydro and wind sources when located in different regions. The performed results suggest the complementarity approach as an alternative for business strategy development for renewable generator companies, especially from the perspective of wind power plants since their association with hydro power plant can minimize their financial risk and gives rise to a more stable cash flow. The methodology for reconstruction of long-term time series is a key aspect to support such studies.
