Abstract

Objective To introduce the methods of reconstructing grade Ⅱ and Ⅲ thumb defect using great toe wrap-around flap with interphulangeal joint. Methods Twelve thumbs of 12 cases were involved. Wrap-around flap from the great toe was harvested by conventional method. The interphalangeal joint was trimmed to provide a bone and joint frame in order to obtain satisfactory appearance and function of the reconstructed thumb. Results All the 12 transplants survived. The reconstructed thumbs had near normal appearance, accurate positioning sensation and good function. Conclusion This reconstruction method for grade Ⅱ and Ⅲ thumh defect could result in a reconstructed thumb with near normal appearance. However part of the great toe needs to be sacrificed.
