Abstract

Objective To investigate the surgical technique and clinical effect of segmental bridging severed finger using emergency free second toe composite tissue flap in reconstruction of full-length thumb and fingers. Methods From June 2007 to June 2015, 16 patients whose proximal segment of the thumb and fingers was damaged and distal part was relatively intact were treated by segmental bridging severed finger using emergency free second toe composite tissue flap to reconstruct the full-length thumb and fingers. Results All 16 reconstructed full-length fingers survived uneventfully. The follow-up period ranged from 5 to 18 months. The reconstructed finger tip sensory function recovered well. Extensor tendon adhesion occurred in 9 cases which underwent tenolysis as secondary surgery. The functional recovery of the remaining reconstructed fingers was good. According to the functional evaluation standards of reconstruction of thumb and finger issued by Hand Surgery Society of the Chinese Medical Association, the results were excellent in 4 cases, good in 9 cases, fair in 3 cases. Conclusion It is feasible for segmental bridging severed finger using emergency free second toe composite tissue flap to reconstruct full-length thumb and fingers. The postoperative effect is satisfactory. It is a recommended method for full-length finger reconstruction.
