Abstract

Peroneal tendon pathology as a cause of lateral ankle pain has been well documented in the medical literature. When recognized early, direct repair of fissuring and longitudinal splitting of the peroneal tendons usually yields good results. Chronic lesions, or those involving both tendons however are less amenable to this treatment. The senior author (KLW) developed a staged reconstruction of the peroneal tendons and their sheath using a Flexor Hallucis Longus (FHL) transfer and Hunter Rods respectively as a salvage procedure for patients with previous multiple failed surgeries. We present the long term follow up (over 5 years) of this staged reconstruction in seven patients who met these criteria.
