Abstract

Twenty-five patients with chronic lateral ankle instability were treated with lateral ankle reconstruction. At an average follow-up of 24% months, 21 of the patients had good or excellent results and four had fair or poor results. It took at least six months for postoperative discomfort to resolve. The two most common complications were skin sloughs and sural nerve dysesthesias. The modified Elmslie lateral ankle reconstruction appears to provide satisfactory stability for symptomatic chronic lateral ankle instability. Key words: instability, talar tilt, ligament.
