Abstract

This chapter addresses the archaeology and paleoecology of Clovis hunter-gatherers in the Rio Grande rift valley and adjacent regions of northwest New Mexico. We focus particularly on the Mockingbird Gap Site and associated collections of Clovis stone tools from the central Rio Grande rift region. We review the Clovis archaeological record from Mockingbird Gap and the region surrounding the site. We then examine the projectile point assemblages at the site and regional scales in terms of dimensions and raw material use. These data are used to construct a model of Clovis paleoecology in the greater Southwest.
