Abstract
A recent editorial in this journal addressed the role and significance of social theory in an era of “new conservatism”. The editorial prompted a specific defence of Marxian social theory and its relevance for contemporary analysis, which in turn led to a series of commentaries which amount to nothing less than a wide-reaching reconsideration of the whole realm of social theory in urban and regional analysis.
