Abstract

Synoptic observations of the polar F-region excitation and ionization show that low energy precipitated electrons cannot account for the diurnal variations in the layer. Furthermore, computations show that the drift theory forwarded by King and collaborators is not in quantitative agreement with the observations presented in the paper. Alternative explanations are discussed.
