Abstract

Choosing a title for the 1900 campaign in favour of the cities of Europe and for improving the quality of life in them was a difficult task for the experts of the Council of Europe. Before arriving at the rather weak term ‘renaissance’, alternatives ranging from ‘renewal’ to ‘rehabilitation’ and even ‘reconquest’ of the city were considered. This last term seems to me, in spite of its military connotations, to grasp the problem well enough.
