Abstract

A compact planar frequency reconfigurable multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) slot antenna is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna system consists of a two element reconfigurable MIMO slot antenna and a UWB sensing antenna for cognitive radio (CR) applications. The reconfigurability in proposed antenna is achieved with different switching states of three p-i-n diodes. The UWB sensing antenna is a stepped slot antenna that covers the frequency spectrum of 3.2–11.6 GHz. The proposed MIMO antenna provides the reconfigurability in the two frequency bands: 3.2–4 GHz and 4.8–6.2 GHz. Moreover, the ultrawide band (UWB) sensing antenna is incorporated in-between the MIMO antenna elements, that not only sense the wide frequency spectrum in sensing mode but also enhances the isolation between them in communicating mode. The complete system of the proposed antenna with compact dimensions (25 mm × 19 mm) is good candidate for future portable cognitive radio applications.
