Abstract

In response to manufacturing paradigm shift, a reconfigurable manufacturing paradigm is proposed to nest the fragmented views of reconfigurability in various perspectives of manufacturing. Reconfigurable manufacturing paradigm is a manufacturing philosophy that smoothly manages reconfiguration of manufacturing systems and make manufacturing systems satisfactorily meet challenges of turbulently changing environments. The reconfigurability of manufacturing systems is discussed in five dimensions, including organization, process, product, equipment and information. It is argued that reconfigurability is the basic means for survivals and developments of manufacturing systems. And, companies with high reconfigurabilities will sharply outperform their rivals in the unpredictable environments.
