Abstract

A compact, reconfigurable planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) for mobile phone applications is presented. Based on recent smart-phone geometries, a PIN diode on an antenna radiator is used for frequency-reconfigurable operation with a PIFA structure. The proposed novel hexa-band built-in mobile antenna, which is designed to cover LTE, GSM850, GSM900, DCS, PCS, and UMTS bands, is satisfactory in terms of its reflection coefficient, radiation patterns, and average gain (efficiency). A prototype is investigated, and good agreement between simulations and measurements is shown. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 55:1926–1928, 2013
