Abstract

The original crystal field model is incompatible with lattice periodicity. Yet experiment provides many examples of localized moments and conduction electrons. The problem of beginning with a very basic Hamiltonian, and recasting it to show localized moments and conduction properties is considered using degenerate perturbation theory. The result is a spin-Hamiltonian of typical form for the localized moments, with conduction electrons as well. At no point is crystal field theory invoked.
