Abstract

The International System of Units (SI) has been promulgated by the international agencies responsible for the definition of units for quantities (measurable properties) in order to have a unified coherent system of quantities and units for use by the international community in commerce, science, engineering and medicine. Different sectors of the scientific community, including clinical laboratory scientists, have recommended parts, or all, of the SI for use in their specific areas of interest. The current status of the adoption and implementation of the SI in the United States is reviewed. The SI and the recommendations for use of the SI in the clinical laboratory are described, and some factors are presented in order to convert laboratory values from their presently used units to those that will be used if the SI is adopted as recommended.
