Recommendations by SESAC on ensuring the near‐term vitality of the Space and Earth Science Program

Abstract

SESAC issued the following statement: It is clear to SESAC that the Challenger tragedy will result in delays of 2 to 5 years in the launch of planned spaceflight programs. If steps are not taken to address the consequences of this hiatus during the immediate and near‐term future, there will be a serious impact upon the vitality of the nation's space and earth science research capability. With no new missions for a few years and a slow build‐up thereafter to levels of activity which are probably below those of preaccident expectations, it will be necessary to increase the level of support for core research activities that are not dependent upon the availability of the shuttle and/or expendable launch vehicle capabilities if the nation is to retain the ability to carry out a vigorous space science program.
