Abstract

Experiments have been performed on low-pressure sodium discharges with substantial radial ground-state depletion in both homogeneous and radial-dependent recombination structures. For the 35 W low-pressure sodium lamp the gain in lamp luminous efficacy is about 10% at optimum structure density. A simplified discharge model is presented and used to discuss and understand the experimental results. This model also provides insight into the influence of the radial-structure density distribution on the electron and ground-state density profiles as a function of the electron density.
