Abstract

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are a group of growth factors that induce the differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells into osteoblasts and stimulate the formation of new bone in areas requiring repair. This is critical in spinal fusion surgery and in the treatment of nonunion in long bone fractures where the formation of new bone is desired.
