Abstract

Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rBST) is an artificial growth hormone synthesised by Recombinant DNA technology. This growth hormone plays a significant role in promoting growth of cow. Bovine somatotropin (BST) is a natural hormone secreted by cow’s pituitary glands. However, the cost of purification was expensive and it needs slaughter 200 cows for providing BST to one cow for one day. This awkward situation finally was broken down by the recombinant DNA technology. To mass-produce the interesting protein, segments including target gene are ligated with vector or phage DNA to form new recombinant DNA. The commercialization and widespread use of rBST had led many courtiers and consumer organizations to focus on their health hazards. As a country with large population, China has the biggest potential markets for whether they are recombinant DNA production or GMO food.
