Abstract

Commonly, children involved in fire play/firesetting are male, of the pre-adolescent age, members of a single parent household with multiple children, academically challenged and impulsive. However, many children who engage in fire play may not fit the above profile, and in order to make the appropriate referrals to outreach programs, acute burn care providers must be aware of children at risk of fire setting behaviors. Therefore, to assist members of the burn team to recognize children at risk of this behavior, an IRB approved review of pediatric patients admitted to this burn center for treatment of burn injuries consequent to fire play was performed. Patients <18 years of age admitted to this burn center between 1/01 - 6/05 for treatment of burn injuries resultant from play with incendiary devices were included in the study group.
