Abstract

The recognition of multicomponent ions has been developed from analysing the permeation of ions through a membrane at a non-steady state. Theoretical methods and an apparatus to analyse the concentration of multicomponent ions by non-steady-state analysis are presented. Cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes were found to be suitable for non-steady-state analysis, since they had adequate ion permeabilities and time lags. A model analysis of the method was performed for a mixture of LiCl, NaCl and CsCl as a model solution. The agreement between the calculated and true concentrations of multicomponent ions was within 10% error. The multicomponent ions were successively recognized from an analysis of their permeation at the non-steady state.
