Abstract

The range of variability of birth-weight within sibships was calculated. The birth-weights of a group of babies with rubella embryopathy, who would be expected to be small-for-dates, were then compared with the birth-weights of their normal siblings. By this comparative method, 80% had an abnormally low birth-weight; whereas, using standard birth-weight charts, only 41-46% would have been judged to have an abnormally low birth-weight. The comparative method may have practical value.
