Abstract

Recognition of dicarboxylic acids by rigid ditopic 6,6′-dipivaloylamino-3,3′-bipyridine (receptor1) and 6,6′-diacetylamino-3,3′-bipyridine (receptor2) has been studied in solution phase. The host–guest interactions of receptor1 with adipic acid (complex A) and 1,4-phenylenediacetic acid (Complex B) in the solid phase including the weak hydrogen bonding in the solid phase of receptor1 have been demonstrated by single crystal X-ray studies. The polymeric network of the interlinked 3D square motif, formed by non-covalent interactions of receptor1 has been rearranged to a 1D wave like polymeric chains (complex A) and 3D polymeric stairs (complex B) in presence of adipic acid and 1,4-phenylenediacetic acid, respectively. The binding behavior between host and guests in the solution phase is also compared with interactions in the solid phase. The mode of interactions between host and guest has also been studied by comparing the stabilization energy in different forms of the host–guest arrangement.
